Manitoba Weekly Vegetable Report

 | Carrots | Cole Crops | Corn |Cucurbits| Onions |Others |

Introduction

Temperatures warmed up for the early portion of the week of September 14th to 20th,  but Wednesday was cool, with trace amounts of rain in portions of our scouting area. Carrots, onions and some cole crops are still in the ground, but harvesting of all of these crops continues.

TOP

Carrots

Carrots appear to be at harvestable sizes in about half of the fields, and are very nearly complete. Aster yellows symptoms continue to be observed, still at levels much, much, much lower than last year.

TOP

Cole Crops

The cole crops are still in the process of being harvested and could be completed within the next week.

There are no new disease or insect concerns to report at this time.

TOP

Corn

Corn scouting has concluded for the year, no major problems to note.

TOP

Cucurbits

Virtually all of the cucurbits (cucumber and pumpkins), have been removed from the field. Nothing new to report.

TOP

Onions

There are still a number of onion crops to be harvested and placed in storage. Some are still actively growing, others have been pulled from the ground, and are drying in the fields. The recent cool and cloudy weather,  is not helping to dry down the tops of the onions which needs to be done prior to storage. Once again temperatures in the upper 20's would help in the dry down process, which was also hindered by rain last week and the week before. As we approach October, the likelihood of sunny warm days will decrease.

This extended dry down period has raised concerns about neck rot in storage. No new diseases of note this week. Pink Root continues to be a problem in at least one field we scout.

Others

Red Beets are harvested, there will be no further reports.
