Be one of the million: find out how to plant trees on your property
The province’s Trees for Tomorrow program committed to plant six million trees in Manitoba over five years, by the end of 2012. To deliver this program, the province partnered with the Manitoba Forestry Association (MFA) — a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to public education about trees and forests. The MFA works with landowners to submit application forms, determine site eligibility, coordinate tree planting and be available to answer your tree planting and tree care questions.
Do you have property that would benefit from trees?
We are looking for landowners who are interested in planting trees on their property. We have three categories of projects:
• Free Tree Giveaways: for people who want to pick up less than 1,000 trees
• Small-scale projects: for schools, municipalities, private landowners and non-profit organizations who want 1,000 – 15,000 trees, where some limited assistance may be available for the project.
• Large-scale projects: for private, municipal, First Nations and Crown lands that require 15,000+ trees and planting assistance.
Why plant trees on your land?
If you are interested in planting trees on your property you are likely already convinced of the benefits of trees.
While the Trees for Tomorrow program is focused on planting trees to extract large amounts of carbon dioxide from the air and reduce the levels of climate – changing greenhouse gases in the air, we also know that trees can reduce soil erosion, create wildlife habitat, enhance the beauty of property and even have health benefits for humans.
What is required of landowners?
Landowners will need to complete the Trees for Tomorrow application and return it to the address at the bottom of the application. Once we receive the application we will contact the landowner and discuss the program and the best tree type for the site and the assistance that you may receive in the afforestation of the vacant land. See below for details about where to find more information about the program and application forms.
Watch for the Trees for Tomorrow display at various events throughout the province to pick up your free tree seedling.
What tree species will be available?
The intent is to plant native tree species and tree varieties which are well adapted to Manitoba’s climate. This will include pine, white and black spruce seedlings and hybrid poplar. Hybrid poplar is ideally suited for the goals of this project because it is fast growing for increased carbon sequestration and can be used for fibre production and, in some cases, biofuels. Seedlings used will be from the Pineland Forest Nursery and other tree nurseries and production facilities.
