Establishing a World Heritage Site
Manitoba supports the Pimachiowin Aki world heritage project on the east side of Lake Winnipeg. The goal is to achieve international recognition for an area of land that straddles the Manitoba-Ontario border. Manitoba is working with First Nations and Ontario on this initiative. If selected, Pimachiowin Aki would join the list of other UNESCO world heritage sites such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Barrier Reef and the Grand Canyon.
Protecting Biological Diversity
Manitoba's Protected Areas Initiative is building a network of protected areas that contain the tremendous biological diversity found in Manitoba's varied landscapes. In protected areas, logging, mining, hydroelectric developments, oil and gas development and other activities that significantly and adversely affect habitat are prohibited.
Celebrate Manitoba Parks
Manitoba's provincial park system is another way we are conserving ecosystems and maintaining biodiversity while providing outdoor recreation experiences in a natural setting. Join us in 2010 as we mark the 50th anniversary of the parks system with special celebrations and free park entry.
