The number of beaver taken by licensed trappers has decreased in recent years because of low pelt prices for beaver.
The reduced trapping pressure has enabled the beaver population to increase, resulting in a greater number of beaver-related problems. Problem incidents are greatest in municipalities located in Western Manitoba around the periphery of Riding Mountain National Park and the Duck Mountains.
To reduce the number of beaver-related problems, a problem beaver program was implemented in 1993. The program provides a subsidy to municipalities to engage licenced trappers to remove only problem beaver in designated problem areas. The municipal subsidy is now $20/problem beaver removed.
The 2009/10 program is to commence on June 1. Rural municipalities are responsible for identifying which trappers they will use over the year. Any licenced trapper wishing to participate should contact their local municipal office to get more details for their area.
In some areas, pond levelers may also be made available as a non-lethal method of preventing beaver damage. See the program guidelines at the nearest municipal office or Manitoba Conservation District Office for more information.
