Predator Management

It is important to Manitoba's livestock industry that damage caused by predators is addressed. Manitoba Conservation has entered into an agreement with the Manitoba Trappers Association (MTA) to administer and deliver problem predator removal services to livestock producers. Under the agreement, after a livestock claim is made through Manitoba Agriculture Services Corporation (MASC), those predators causing the damage are targeted. A total of 57 MASC claims were dealt with in 2010/11 and 17 wolves, 253 coyotes and 9 foxes were removed. An additional 20 coyotes, 3 wolves, and 1 fox were taken from claims originating the previous year. Since the inception of the program, 551 MASC claims have been addressed and 1,475 problem predators (mostly coyotes) removed.

Educational initiatives on predator management have occurred over the last few years. In the fall of 2010, Manitoba Conservation, MTA, Manitoba Cattle Producers, and the Manitoba Model Forest presented predator management seminars in Swan River, Ashern, and Lac du Bonnet. Participants received information on hunting and trapping methods. Workshops are being organized again for the fall of 2011.
