What is the Employee Assistance Program?
The purpose of this program is to help employees and their families
with problems that have the potential to impact on the quality of
their home and work life. The program is both confidential and completely
voluntary. Employee and family members living with the employee
can seek the help they want on their own.
Why does the Employee Assistance Program exist?
Just as all of us occasionally suffer from physical illness or
disability, we all experience personal or emotional difficulties
at some point in our lives. Most of the time we are able to solve
our problems with the help of families and friends. Sometimes, however,
the problem persists and becomes overwhelming, affecting our life
at work and at home.
The program was established to help employees and their families
deal with problems before they result in serious deterioration of
an employees' family and work life.
Early identification
Most problems are more easily handled if they can be identified
in their early stages. If ignored they often become more serious.
The program promotes early identification of problems. Our job is
to ensure you know what is available to assist you and your family.
What kinds of problems does the Program deal with?
The program provides help with a wide range of problems:
- Stress
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Grief
- Marital Conflict
- Family Problems
- Alcohol, Drug Use
- Gambling
- Work problems
The Program also provides special services
to employees and families who are dealing with workplace stress
associated with trauma, interpersonal conflict and personal or sexual
harassment.
How does the Employee Assistance Program work?
Most requests for help come directly from the employee or a family
member. Other requests may result when a co-worker, supervisor,
union representative, or shop steward recommends the program as
a potential source of help. The program is entirely voluntary. When
an employee decides to use the program, a first meeting is held
between the employee and a counsellor and a plan with goals for
addressing the employee's concerns is developed.
Who can use the Program?
The Employee Assistance Program is available to all government
of Manitoba employees, current and retired, and their immediate
family members living with the employee. In addition, certain crown
corporations and agencies purchase the EAP service on behalf of
their employees who are then also eligible to utilize the Employee
Assistance Program.
What about confidentiality? How do I know that my use of the program
is private?
Confidentiality is assured. Counsellors in the Program are bound
by ethics and by practice standards in their profession to insure
that confidentiality is maintained. Information is not released
from the program without an employee's written consent unless there
is immediate risk for self harm, harm to others, or child abuse.
Is the service available outside of Winnipeg?
Yes! One counsellor is located in Brandon and provides services
to employees in Brandon and Dauphin. Counsellors also travel to
The Pas and Thompson on a regular basis.
To Arrange an EAP Information Session in the Workplace
The Employee Assistance Program welcomes the opportunity to provide
an information session in the workplace, to employees of the provincial
government and employees belonging to crown corporations and agencies
covered by a service agreement. A phone call to the program is all
that is required.
