Work Expectations for Single Persons and Couples Without Children

Most people who receive Employment and Income Assistance (EIA) are expected to look for work. This is called a "work expectation."

You will have a work expectation if you are:

  • receiving assistance as a single adult;
  • receiving assistance as a single person and you are under the age of 18;
  • receiving assistance as a couple and you do not have children;
  • you are a child of 16 years of age or older who is receiving assistance with your parent or parents and you are not attending school or training.

You will not have a work expectation if you are:

  • a senior citizen or a person with disabilities receiving EIA;
  • a child who is receiving assistance with your parent or parents and you are attending school or training;
  • living in a crisis intervention shelter.

Develop an action plan

Work expectations may include:

  • looking for a job;
  • accepting and keeping a job;
  • taking education and training programs that will help you to get and keep a job.

Your worker will meet with you to develop an Action Plan to help you prepare for and get a job. This plan will list all the steps you should take and how you should take them. For example, if your plan is to look for work but you need a resume, the first step of your plan would be to get help with preparing a resume. You will receive a copy of your Action Plan. If your circumstances change, you should talk to your worker about changing your action plan.

Follow through with the plan

If you are able to meet your work expectation but you do not follow through on your work expectation, your eligibility with EIA may be affected. You must discuss any problems you have following your Action Plan with your worker.

If you have any questions about work expectations, please contact your worker.
