Help for Teens and Children

FVPP BannerDoes your family have a lot of arguments and fights?
Does one person in your family hurt another?
Do people in your family call each other names?
Does one person in your family make the others feel bad?

Domestic violence is sometimes called domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is when one grownup hurts another grownup in a family. This usually happens during fights between people who are married, divorced, dating or living together. Domestic violence can happen in all kinds of families: rich or poor, old or young, and from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!

Abuse is wrong. You and your family do not have to put up with it. It is normal to feel confused and afraid about what is happening. It can help to talk about your feelings with someone you trust.

There are things you can do to stay safer.

  • Stay away from the fighting.
  • Do not try to stop the fighting yourself.
  • Go to a safe room in your home. The safest room is one that has a lock on the door and a phone.
  • Keep the phone number of an adult you trust. Call if you need help.
  • If you are old enough to leave the house by yourself, go to the home of a friend or family member.
  • If you are afraid you or someone in your family will get hurt, call the police at 911.
