Resources for people affected by family violence in Manitoba began over 30 years ago at a grassroots level. The Women’s Shelter Program began in the late 1970s and is still a leader in Canada. In 1984, the Manitoba government gave management for funding and co-ordinating family violence support and services to Manitoba Family Services. In 1985, Family Dispute Services was created to address the problem of Family Violence in Manitoba. In 1999, the program name was changed to the Family Violence Prevention Program (FVPP).
