Immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence face special problems. Because of their different languages and cultures, they often feel isolated from other people. This is sometimes made worse by a violent spouse or partner, and they may not get any help from their cultural communities.

Another kind of abuse immigrant women may face is threats to have them deported or their children taken away. This is mental abuse, often used to break down a woman’s self-confidence.
Remember: Even if you are not a Canadian citizen, you do have rights while living in Canada. You do not have to put up with abuse of any kind.
All agencies funded through Family Violence Prevention Program (FVPP) work with newcomers and immigrants.
