Provincial Rabies Management Program - 2014 Rabies Surveillance Data

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the central nervous system of mammals, including humans. Once clinical signs appear, rabies is almost always fatal in animals and people. In Manitoba, the animals that most often transmit rabies are skunks, cows and foxes.

In Manitoba, rabies is reportable under the Public Health Act and the Animal Diseases Act and all suspect cases must be reported to Manitoba Health. Federally, rabies is reportable under the Health of Animals Act. All suspect rabies cases are verified in a Canadian Food Inspection Agency rabies laboratory.
