The
Environmental Health Branch of the
Public Health Division responds to chemical,
microbiological and social public health issues. The Branch monitors
and participates in a coordinated response to environmental health issues
to Manitobans. Currently, the
Branch's mandate is environmental health risk assessment, food protection,
environmentally infectious diseases, and dental/oral health.
Activities:
- developing and monitoring provincial health
standards and policy regarding food and food inspection;
- investigating food-borne illness and
coordinating food recalls;
- Participating in the enforcement of The Non Smokers
Health
Protection Act;
- developing and implementing a provincial Oral
Health Strategy, including the monitoring and funding of community
water fluoridation systems, and provision of grants for community
prevention projects for groups at risk;
- surveillance of education and practice
standards and dental health promotion as a component of overall
health;
- monitoring the status of,
and participating in a coordinated response to environmental health
threats to Manitobans;
- contributing to provincial responses to
environmental health emergencies;
- co-ordinating the health component of
environmental risk assessments; and
- Development of legislation related to The Public Health
Act.
