Surveillance of Problematic Substance Use and Related Harms in Manitoba

Surveillance of opioid misuse and overdose in Manitoba has been ongoing since 2017. A baseline report provided data up until the end of 2016, followed by quarterly reports thereafter. Surveillance of cannabis in Manitoba began in 2018 in anticipation of legalization of cannabis for non-medical use. A baseline report of cannabis-related data was available in November 2018.

Evaluations of the opioid and cannabis surveillance systems were recently conducted, and a number of changes have been made based on stakeholders' feedback. Most notably, we are now taking an all substance approach rather than reporting exclusively on opioids and cannabis. Our quarterly reports will now focus on problematic substance use and related harms and they will be more timely, shorter, and feature an infographic-style format.
