Review & Rate 8

This edition of Review & Rate contains 12 new television ads from Australia, New Zealand and
North America. It’s a complete one-hour program for your students. The goal of Review & Rate
remains to encourage young Manitobans to think critically about the issue of tobacco use from a
number of perspectives. Your students will view the best television ads we can find worldwide dealing with tobacco and select which ad is the “most effective” at keeping them tobaccofree.
We will televise the winning ad province-wide. But we’ve made some improvements! These
changes are based on comments and suggestions from teachers throughout Manitoba who continue to provide great feedback on how to improve the program.

Prizes are awarded regionally. To ensure equitable distribution of prizes, randomly-selected
participating schools in each one of the province’s 11 health regions will be awarded a prize.

Prizes are now awarded to teachers for their classroom use. We will provide one teacher in
each health region with a $250 gift certificate to www.chapters.indigo.ca.

You decide what merchandise is purchased and how you want to award it. Have a draw and select one student, or five or 10 students to win books; purchase merchandise for a class party or event; or purchase DVDs you’ve always wanted for your classroom. It’s up to you! Check out www.chapters.indigo.ca for oodles and oodles of great prize ideas.

No more mailing back mounds of entries. You (or a designated student) tally the votes and then you, the teacher, complete and mail back one official tally sheet per class.

A classroom game! Instead of the standard background information on each subject area, this
year’s Additional Resource is a game: “Dodge the Disease.” You can simply read the resource to gain background information on the subject areas addressed in the ads or you can play the game to extend your classroom learning.

Review & Rate Contents

  • DVD with 12 outstanding anti-tobacco ads from around the world. Note that some are very graphic. Others deal with extremely emotional subject matter. Please ensure students are aware of the subject matter and provide any student with the opportunity to opt out of the exercise as appropriate before the DVD is shown.

  • Student ballots for students to rate the ads and select which ad they believe is the “most effective.” Students no longer provide any personal information on this form; this year, teachers complete a tally sheet and enter the prize draw on behalf of their classroom.

  • Additional Resource for Teachers has changed this year. Teachers have often suggested we create a game or additional activity. This year we have taken information that is presented in the 12 ads, as well as a variety of other interesting facts, and created a game. Teachers can play the game with students; or, if you choose not to play the game, read the information beforehand to learn a variety of tidbits to discuss with students while viewing the ads.
