Celebrating the 2012 International Year of Co-operatives with the community!

 

Everyone is invited to our first ever Journée Coop | Co-op Day to be held on
Sunday, September 16, 2012
from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
in Festival Park at The Forks!

Journée Coop / Co-op Day at The Forks is a community celebration of Manitoba co-operatives, in the spirit of the 2012 International Year of Cooperatives, as declared by the United Nations.

A day of festivities for the entire family, the first ever Journée Coop │ Co-op Day at The Forks will have something for everyone, from live music on stage, clowns, jugglers and plenty of other activities throughout the day. 

Throughout the day, co-operatives of all kinds, sizes and industries will highlight the diversity and importance of the co-operative sector in Manitoba and our local communities by displaying their products and services as well as providing free activities and giveaways for all ages at their respective kiosks, such as face painting, games, mascots, promotional items, etc.

Schedule of events will be updated periodically throughout the next few months on this page.

Join us at The Forks on Sunday, September 16th, 2012 from 12:00 pm to 4 pm and let’s celebrate the International Year of Co-operatives!

On January 12, 2012, over 100 people gathered at the Manitoba Legislature for the provincial launch of the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives (IYC).  The event was part of the Canadian launch of the IYC as Manitobans joined with people all across the country to celebrate the occasion.

Co-ops from across the province had displays at the legislature for three days during the week the launch was held. A number of co-operatives shared information about their work with those who attended the launch, visitors to the legislature, Members of the Legislative Assembly and staff who work there.

Manitoba Housing and Community Development has awarded a special $1000 bursary for a post-secondary student enrolled in a co-operative education program in Manitoba in 2011/12.  This special bursary was awarded to celebrate 2012 as the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives.  The Province welcomes this declaration, recognizing the significant economic and social contribution co-operatives make in Manitoba.
	Congratulations to Corinne Murdock, who is attending the University of Winnipeg in the Urban and Inner City Studies Program.  Corinne grew up in a large family on Fisher River Cree Nation, two hours north of Winnipeg.  Corinne tells us that she has grown to love the people and the Lord Selkirk Park community in Winnipeg where she lives.  Corinne volunteers in the community to bring positive change by participating in the Community Watch, recycling, feeding the homeless and fundraising for school activities. In addition to her $1000 bursary, Corinne will be employed as a Summer Student in the Department of Housing and Community Development in 2012.
