Scott Anderson

Scott Anderson is the Acting Chief Geologist of the Precambrian Geoscience Section of the MGS. Scott obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba (1992) and a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University (1998). His Ph.D. research was focused on the tectonothermal evolution of the Laurentian margin in north-central Newfoundland. Prior to joining MGS in 2001, Scott worked four years in Mexico, conducting gold exploration as the Senior Structural Geologist for Campbell Resources Inc. His current research is focused on the tectonic and metallogenic evolution of the western Superior Province and the south margin of the Hearne craton, and the structural geology of orogenic gold deposits in the Rice Lake greenstone belt.

Alan Bailes has over 35 years experience mapping in the Flin Flon Belt with emphasis on the Snow Lake area. Between 2001 and 2008 he was a Chief Geologist of the Precambrian Mapping Section of the Manitoba Geological Survey. In 2008, he began a consulting career and has worked with industry on several  advanced exploration projects.

Jim received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Geology (Stratigraphy) from the University of Manitoba. He has worked for the Minerals Division of the Provincial Government, since 1975 in various geological functions and has been an Industrial Minerals Geologist, with the Manitoba Geological Survey, since 1990. He is currently involved in studies of potential Phanerozoic mineral deposits (including MVT and REE) and shallow gas potential in Manitoba; in addition to ongoing Industrial Mineral investigations.

Valérie graduated from the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (B.Sc.) before completing a M.Sc. thesis at INRS-ETE. She joined the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC-Québec) in 2008 after working in the mineral industry and as a research assistant. She is currently involved in gold and Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr oriented activities under the phase 4 of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative.

Gilles Bellefleur

Gilles received a Ph.D. (1997) in geophysics from École Polytechnique in Montréal, Canada, where he also worked as a research associate. He joined the Geological Survey of Canada in 2000. His work has involved various aspects of borehole and surface-reflection seismic data processing and interpretation. He is currently working to unravel the main characteristics of massive sulphide deposits recorded on 3-component seismic data, providing signatures suitable for the direct detection of such deposits at great depths.

Ian Berzins

Mr. Berzins is a mining engineer with more than 30 years of experience in engineering, mine operations, maintenance, human resources and senior mine management having worked in gold, oil sands, coal and base metals operations in North America.  In March 2013, Mr. Berzins was appointed president and CEO of San Gold Corporation where he has held the role of Chief Operating Officer since 2008 and has been instrumental in San Gold’s transition from exploration company to gold producer.  He previously held senior management positions with Sherwood Copper, Albian Sands and Suncor Energy and served as General Manager at several Canadian gold mining companies including Harmony Gold (Canada) Limited, Echo Bay Mining (Lupin Operations) and Miramar Con Mine.  He is registered as a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba and the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.

Christian Böhm

Christian Böhm received his diploma degree in structural geology and Ph.D. in geochronology and isotope geology from ETH Zurich in Switzerland. He did post-doctoral research and teaching at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, prior to joining the Manitoba Geological Survey in 2002. In Manitoba Christian’s focus has primarily been on the Precambrian evolution of the Archean Superior and Hearne cratons using geological mapping, geochemistry, structural, isotope and geochronological methods. Since 2009 Christian has been Head of the Precambrian Mapping section, and since January 2013 Acting Director of the Manitoba Geological Survey.

His project focuses on the nature and geometry of the Lalor auriferous VMS deposit as part of an on-going collaborative research project by the Geological Survey of Canada, Hudbay, the INRS and the University of Ottawa.

Anton Chakhmouradian graduated with an MSc and PhD in Geology from St. Petersburg State University in Russia and currently is Professor of Mineralogy and Petrology at the University of Manitoba. For the past 20+ years, his research has been focused on the origin, evolution and economic potential of carbonatites and related mantle-derived igneous rocks. He has worked on industrial and academic projects in Russia, Canada, USA, China, Mongolia, Morocco and Tanzania.

Chris Couëslan graduated from Brandon University in 2003 with a BSc. in geology, and from the University of Western Ontario in 2005 with an MSc. in geology. He is currently completing a PhD in geology at the University of Calgary. Chris has been working at the Manitoba Geological Survey since 2008. His work is focused on the geology of the Thompson Nickel Belt and deciphering the geology of high-grade metamorphic domains.

Ms. Desgroseilliers is the Unit Manager and an Environmental Engineer in AMEC's Winnipeg office. She has Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering and Biology.  She is also an Environmental Professional in Water Quality, Land Quality and Mining. She has seventeen years of experience related to site characterization, soil and groundwater remediation, environmental impact assessments, and environmental baseline studies. Her experience has been gained on projects located throughout Manitoba, northwestern Ontario and Saskatchewan and includes working with Manitoba First Nations. She is currently a board member of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies of Manitoba (ACEC Manitoba).

Alexandra is the Director of Sustainable Development at Osisko Mining Corporation. She has over 20 years experience managing multi-disciplinary projects for a range of industries including mining, environment and transportation. Her work at Osisko has included leading the combined federal and provincial environmental assessment process for the Hammond Reef Project. Aboriginal engagement, public consultation and government relations on the Project also form a key part of Alexandra’s responsibilities. Alexandra is a Professional Engineer who holds an undergraduate degree in Mining and Mineral Process Engineering from the University of British Columbia and a masters degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University.

 

Claude Deveau

Claude Deveau

Claude Deveau (P.Eng) graduated from Technical University of Nova Scotia (now DalTech) with a Bachelor in Mining Engineering in 1987. Since 1988, Claude has been a mill operation Metallurgist/Process Engineer at Tantalum Mining Corporation.  His groundbreaking work is well known in the global mineral processing community.  A major highlight has been his design and implementation of unique processes for beneficiation/recovery of spodumene, tantalum and pollucite ores. Two of which have been patented.  In 2013, Claude was promoted to Site Technical Manager as well as reserve manager for the Tanco orebody. These dual roles allow Claude to draw from a quarter century of innovative operational experience. Claude is a team player who strives to provide site wide technical support to the mine. He is committed to solving technical issues. These range from solving mineral processing challenges to the installation of mine geotechnical instrumentation.

Mark Fedikow

Mark has 35 years of industry and government experience as an exploration geochemist and mineral deposits geologist. He has worked for major and junior mining exploration companies and the Manitoba Geological Survey completing his employment at the Survey as Chief Geologist of the Mineral Deposits Section. In 2001 Mark was the recipient of the Provincial Geologists Medal, a Canadian national award for outstanding geoscientific achievement. He has successfully applied partial and selective extraction geochemical technologies including the Mobile Metal Ions Process (MMI) in exploration programs for lode and placer gold, base metal massive sulphides, platinum group metals, magmatic nickel-copper, porphyry copper deposits and kimberlite/carbonatite in a variety of geological settings and overburden environments. Mark has published numerous articles on mineral deposits and their geochemical expressions in rock, soil and vegetation sample media. He is a Fellow of the Association of Applied Geochemists.

Simon Gagné

Simon has been a geologist with the Manitoba Geological Survey since 2009.  His research interests include metamorphic petrology, structural controls on mineral deposits, and mineral deposit geology. He is particularly interested in working on lode gold and VMS deposits. After spending several summers doing geological investigations in Snow Lake, he is now pursuing projects in the Cranberry Portage and Reed Lake area. He obtained a B.Sc. in Geology from Université du Québec à Montréal in 2001 and a M.Sc. in Geology from Dalhousie University in 2004.

Glen Kuntz

Glen Kuntz is a registered Professional Geoscientist (Ontario) with over 20 years of broad-based expertise in all facets of exploration, mineral resources/reserves, reconciliation, production statistics, mine planning/scheduling, mine production, business development, and executive management.  He graduated with a B.Sc. Degree in geology from University of Manitoba in 1991 and a premasters program in geo statistics in 1992. Glen has held positions of increasing responsibility with mining companies including Noranda, Vale, Rea Gold and Placer Dome (Canada and Australian Operations). Glen started his career 20 years ago as an exploration geologist with Noranda Exploration at the Monument Bay/Stull Lake camp and spent 6 years at Placer Dome-Campbell mine in the Red Lake operation in various project/team lead roles. In 2008 Glen augmented his business expertise by completing an executive acumen and leadership program. In addition to his role with Mega, Glen currently holds an active position as a member of the Mining Association of Manitoba Inc.’s Aboriginal Relations Committee which was created to assist members in understanding and addressing First Nations’ and Aboriginal peoples’ priorities, challenges and issues, in Manitoba, as well as to assist First Nations and Aboriginal peoples in understanding the mineral exploration and mining sector.

His portfolio recently expanded to include Organizational Development for the Manitoba Operations. Tania Martins graduated in Geology in 2002 from University of Porto, Portugal. After a brief period of time in consulting she obtained her PhD in Geology in 2009 from the University of Porto studying Li-Sn-Nb-Ta mineralization in granitic pegmatites. In 2010 and 2011 Tania worked with Anton Chakhmouradian at the University of Manitoba on the mineralogy of alkaline rocks and carbonatites. Tania has worked for the Manitoba Geological Survey since November 2011.

Dr. David Mchaina, is a professional mining engineer with over 25 years of progressive professional experience in areas including mining engineering, tailings management, environmental impact assessment, water quality assessment and water management, permitting, mine closure planning and held major roles  in community/public engagement and consultations. Since obtaining engineering degrees from the University of Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia and the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada he has worked for various mining companies including Boliden Limited, New Boliden; Boliden Westmin Canada Limited; Westmin Resources Limited; Goldcorp Inc.; Dickenson Mines Limited in various senior management capacities.  Dr. Mchaina is currently working for Victory Nickel Inc., Nuinsco Resources Limited and CBAY Minerals Inc. as Vice President, Environment and Sustainable Development. In addition, Dr. Mchaina worked at Luanshya Division of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines and Wankie Colliery in Zimbabwe. Dr. Mchaina has also been involved in projects in Spain, Sweden, USA, Chile, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Saudi Arabia and Tanzania. Ms Mihychuk is a professional geoscientist with over 35 years of experience in the mining industry. She is principal of CR Services, a business consulting firm specializing in mineral project development,  economic development, governance, social responsibility and regulatory matters. Prior to that, she was Director of Corporate Relations for HudBay Minerals. She also served as Director of Regulatory Affairs for the PDAC, a national industry association. She also held the position of Minister of Mines in the Manitoba government from 1999 to 2004, and served as a member of the Manitoba Legislature for nine years. MaryAnn is director of Gossan Resources and the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada.

 

Linda Murphy

Linda A. Murphy obtained her BSc (hons) in Geological Science from the University of Manitoba in 2006 and joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in the same year. She works in the tectonostratigraphy in the Kisseynew Domain and since 2009 has taken an additional role through the development of liaison programs in partnership with Manitoba’s remote and First Nation communities. The MGS program promotes postsecondary education, encourages respectful mutual understandings of stakeholder needs in traditional land use areas, and provides a geology contact person should land use concerns arise.

Rob Penner

Rob is the Executive Director of the Northern Manitoba Mining Academy in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Prior to this, Rob was Chair of Sciences within the Faculty of Arts and Science at University College of the North in The Pas, and has also served UCN as the Dean of Health and Applied Science, Head of the Department of Renewable Resources, and Ecotourism Project Manager within the Northern Forest Diversification Centre. His academic training and experiences are within the areas of biology, ecology, and natural resources management. In addition to his career in administration, education, and research, Rob has a diversity of experiences spanning from his start as a motorcycle mechanic to computer software technician, farmer, canoe guide, biologist, and international development practitioner, among others jobs. This multiplicity of experiences make his resume look like a mess but convince him of the power of ‘cross-pollination’ by working with diverse groups and people.

Sherri-Lynn Rollins joined Mineral Resources Division as the Aboriginal Issues Policy Analyst May 2013.  Previously, she was a Project Manager for Priorities and Planning Committee of Cabinet and worked in Agreements Management, Manitoba Aboriginal and Northern Affairs. Ms. Rollins background comprises human resources, business, and organizational development and policy roles in the federal government and in the private sector. In over a decade of federal public service she worked for Agriculture Canada, Canada Border Services Agency and Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada.  As President and co-founder of Wakefield Research and Education she helped survey the first national event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Ms. Rollins career has focused on many dynamic areas including: community and citizen engagement and government access; agricultural policy and rural development; border security, legacy issues of Indian Residential schools; energy and health policy. Sherri has a BA in Conflict Resolution Studies from the University of Winnipeg.

Ric has worked for more than 36 years with the Manitoba Geological Survey, mapping in the Flin Flon greenstone belt, Lynn Lake greenstone belt, and greenstone belts in the northern Superior Province. He also participated in the regional mapping of the diverse terranes in the far north of Manitoba, at the margin of the Hearne craton. Much of the work has focused on the stratigraphy and tectonic setting of volcanic sequences and contained massive sulphide deposits. Now retired from government, Ric continues to be active in the geological community.

Michelle Trommelen

Michelle Trommelen is the Manitoba Geological Survey’s Quaternary Geologist. She obtained her MSc. at the University of Victoria in 2006, and her PhD at the University of Waterloo in 2013. Her research focuses on interpretation of the surficial geology in northern Manitoba, including mapping, reconstruction of ice flow and erratic transport distances, and palaeoglaciology. Prior to joining the MGS, Michelle worked for a surficial geologist for Stantec, mainly on environmental impact assessments and terrain stability.

Xue-Ming (Eric) Yang

Xue-Ming (Eric) Yang, Ph.D., P.Geo., has been trained and practised as an Economic Geologist both in China and Canada. He worked as a faculty member in the University of Science and Technology of China for ten years and as an Exploration Geologist for few mining companies including INCO (now Vale) for seven years. Eric joined the Manitoba Geological Survey in June 2011 as a Mineral Deposit Geologist, investigating geology and metallogeny of various ore deposits via geological mapping, lithogeochemistry, petrology, and GIS analysis to provide fundamental knowledge of geosciences for mining industry, academia and the public, and to facilitate sustainable development of mineral resources in an environmentally friendly manner. He currently serves as Chairperson of Mineral Deposit Division (2013-2014), Geological Association of Canada. His interests of research include magmatic nickel-copper-PGE deposits, intrusion-related gold deposits, and alkaline rock-carbonatite associated rare earth element deposits.

Xiaohui Zhou

Xiaohui Zhou obtained his B. Sc. Degree in geology at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing (CUGB) in the summer of 2009. After his graduation, Xiaohui continued his graduate studies in mineralogy, petrology and metallogeny at CUGB. During this period, he took part in a geological mapping project in the vicinity of the Alxa Block of western Inner Mongolia, China. Xiaohui has been a Ph.D. candidate in structural geology and tectonics at the University of Waterloo (UW) since the fall of 2011. He has also acted as a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses “Methods in Geological Mapping” and “Mineral Deposits” at UW. In 2012 and 2013, he carried out detailed geological mapping (scale 1:1000, 1:5000) in the vicinity of the Ogama-Rockland and Central Manitoba mines at the southeast margin of the Ross River Pluton, southeast Manitoba. His research is focused on the lithological and structural setting of the intrusion-hosted or greenstone-hosted, shear-related, lode gold deposits of the southeastern Rice Lake belt.
