District Energy / Integrated Community Energy

District Energy is the distribution of thermal energy from a central plant facility by using a pipeline distribution system. The thermal energy can be provided through geothermal heat pump technology. The economic viability of district energy systems often relates closely to the energy density of the thermal customers being served and the level of customer subscription to the district energy system. As a result, district energy systems tend to be located in urban cores within towns and cities that serve a combination of applications including commercial, institutional and residential customers.

District geothermal energy can provide significant energy savings.

Manitoba examples and additional information:

Île-des-Chênes Community Centre District Geothermal Project

  • A District Geothermal Heating and Cooling System in Manitoba that connects an arena, fire hall and community centre.

  • The District Geothermal System is expected to operate at approximately 500% efficiency.

  • The community centre is anticipated to use 60% less energy, and energy costs for the arena are expected to be reduced by 40%.

  • The initiative is an outstanding accomplishment for a municipality of just over 5,000 residents.

  • See a video and pictures of the geothermal project at :  www.fcm.ca/home/awards/fcm-sustainable-communities-awards/2012-winners/energy-–-co-winner-1.htm

This District Geothermal Project at Île-des-Chênes received a District Geothermal Grant from the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Incentive Program that is offered by the Government of Manitoba.
