Flin Flon Project

Targeted Geoscience Initiative III
(TGI III)

Natural Resources Canada’s Targeted Geoscience Initiative Program-3 (TGI-3) provides integrated geoscience knowledge pertaining to areas of high base metal potential, with the intent of stimulating private-sector resource exploration focused on base metal reserves in established mining communities.

The Flin Flon TGI-3 is a five year (2005-2010) multidisciplinary geoscience project under the TGI-3 Program, centred on the world-class Paleoproterozoic Trans-Hudson base-metal mining camps of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.  The principal program and project outcome is to contribute directly to improving the geoscience knowledge of the greater La Ronge-Flin Flon- Lynn Lake district (see below), to reduce the geological risk inherent in exploration and development associated with extending known reserves to depth and the search for new hidden deposits. In addition, it will contribute to filling the present capacity gap in highly qualified personnel in the base metal exploration sector.

The project has been developed through joint provincial-federal-industry consultation and will be delivered as a fully integrated partnership, in collaboration with provincial geological surveys and with participation by industry and academia.

The project is managed by a steering committee made up of provincial and federal survey and academia representatives along with major and junior industry representatives. Its objective is to develop and test new geoscientific models, methods and approaches for base metal exploration in the region utilizing an upgraded geoscience knowledge base, including bedrock and surficial mapping, airborne geophysics, seismic exploration, borehole and geochemical data, and till geochemistry. The project has three major components, 1) Tier One: centred on the Glennie-Flin Flon-Snow Lake VMS district; 2) Tier Two: focused on the regional VMS and Ni-Cu-PGE potential of the greater Trans-Hudson of Saskatchewan and Manitoba; and 3) Tier Three: focused on regional targeting of Iron-Oxide-Copper-Gold potential.
