Overview

Granite is an igneous rock that has been cooled slowly to form a substance that approaches the hardness and durability of diamonds. Granite continues to gain popularity for its unique decorative, versatile and durable attributes and has many stone product. One company currently harvests granite in Manitoba.

Mineralogy

Granite is an igneous rock. Granite is formed from magma that cools slowly deep below the earth’s surface. Granite’s three essential minerals are feldspar, quartz, and mica. These minerals occur in different proportions, giving each granite its own color, texture and structural characteristics.

Markets

Granite is widely used for building stone, to make countertops, signs, tiles, and monuments and other products for commercial and residential applications. Granite is supplied to the home renovation market and for larger projects like the Hotel Fort Garry and the Pan Am monument at the Forks, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Locations

  • Coldspring Granite (Canada) Ltd. operates a granite quarry and cutting plant 14-km southeast of Lac du Bonnet in southeastern Manitoba.
  • Societe Miniere Polycor Inc. intermittently operates a quarry 90-km east of Winnipeg.

Mining

Large blocks or slabs of rock are quarried and shipped to plants for finishing.
