Project Description

Main objectives:

To evaluate the timing and nature of metamorphosed shear zones, metamorphic contrasts across shear zones, and contact metamorphism associated with plutons in the southern Flin Flon belt.

Methodology:

Key outcrops along shear zones, within fault bounded blocks, and around plutons will be visited. Suitable lithologies will be sampled for further thin section and whole rock geochemical studies. Laboratory studies will include petrographic microscopy, structural analyses, mineral chemistry via electron microprobe, thermodynamic phase modelling based on whole rock geochemistry and mineral chemistry, and in-situ U-Pb geochronology.

Benefits:

Understanding the timing and magnitude of movement across shear zones in the Flin Flon belt will result in a better understanding of the early accretion of the arc prior to the terminal collision of the Trans-Hudson Orogen. Understanding these shear zones can also have economic implications where gold mineralization is present.

Plans for fiscal year 2017-2018:

  • Final field work: targeted mapping and sampling of outcrops (2-3 weeks).
  • Petrographic work on thin sections.
  • Ar/Ar dating on File Lake and Athapapuskow Lake samples.
  • Thermodynamic phase modelling and geothermobarometry.
  • Structural analysis (partly based on microstructural techniques).
