Project Description

Main objectives:

The main objectives of this program are to provide additional geological constraints by completing inland traverses. The data will be combined with shoreline geological data acquired during the NATMAP project (1998). The project aims to provide a higher resolution geological map by extending the mapping inland. It will deliver better constraints on the spatial distribution of the various lithological units and enhance our knowledge of the stratigraphy and structural framework of the area which will in turn provide a better understanding of the mineral potential of the area. Effort will also focus on documenting and reviewing the setting of known lode-gold, magmatic Ni-Cu and VMS-type base metal mineralizations.

Methodology:

The project will include 1:20 000 scale bedrock geological mapping of areas of high interests (volcanic rocks, shear zones, etc.) to complement NATMAP shoreline geology. The geology of lower priority areas (e.g., plutons) will be interpreted from earlier mapping, geophysical data, visits of carefully selected key outcrops for groundtruthing and by lithogeochemical and Sm/Nd isotope analyses. Key exposures along the shoreline will also be revisited. In addition, detailed lithological and structural mapping will focus on known mineral occurrences. To complement geological fieldwork, focused lithogeochemistry, Sm-Nd isotopic analyses, as well as U/Pb geochronology will be obtained from key areas. Drill core from selected drill holes intersecting some of the key mineral deposits will be examined in detailed. Available airborne geophysical data will also be integrated to help with the map interpretation.

The new set of geological maps will provide better constraints on the distribution of units and increase our knowledge of the internal stratigraphy of the various packages of volcanic rocks from the area. Structural analysis and analytical techniques (whole-rock geochemistry, Sm/Nd isotopes and U-Pb dating) will help also help gaining a better understanding of the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the rocks from the Reed Lake area. The project will also provide a better knowledge of the mineral potential of the Reed Lake area and the factors controlling mineralization.

Plans for fiscal year 2017-2018:

  • 3  weeks of examination of recent and historical drillcore from the Reed Lake area.
  • Contribution to the Report of Activities 2017.
  • Technical presentation and poster for the Mining and Minerals Convention 2017.
  • Production of two geological maps at 1:30 000 scale.
