Project Description

Main objectives:

This project is an extension of the GEM Energy: Hudson Bay and Fox basins project (2008-2013).The overall objectives are to acquire new and provide improved geoscientific knowledge for use in petroleum exploration and development targets in the Hudson Bay Basin.

Methodology:

  • Paleozoic stratigraphy: detailed correlations of core and outcrop; stable isotope geochemical profiling of core; biostratigraphy to help constrain correlations; organic chemistry of organic-bearing units; field work to visit relevant stratigraphically important outcrops; fluid inclusion analysis of fracture fills; apatite-fission track analysis; and lineament mapping to determine regional stresses.
  • Geophysical magnetotelluric survey of the Kaskattama highland area, north of community of Shamattawa, to investigate subsurface bedrock thickness.

 

Benefits:

The project addresses a need by the petroleum industry to better understand the potential resource opportunity the Hudson Bay Basin offers, and makes this frontier basin seem more attractive to investors. More information on the resource potential of the Hudson Bay Lowland is needed for land use planning, strategic planning and northern development opportunities.

 

Plans for fiscal year 2017-2018:

  • Onshore and offshore basin-wide stratigraphic correlations, with particular focus on the onshore sections of Manitoba and Ontario.
  • Finalize stable isotope core profile compilation and correlations.
  • Magnetotelluric geophysical survey of the northern portion of the Kaskattama highland area, near Bouchard Lake.
