Project Description

Main objectives:

The objectives of this study are to conduct local-scale kimberlite-indicator-mineral sampling of till, collect paleo-ice flow measurements, and compile, digitize and update existing mapping and till-geochemistry data.

Methodology:

  • Road-supported fieldwork along the road between Kinoosao and Leaf Rapids.
  • Measurement of ice-flow indicators.
  • Collection of till samples for kimberlite-indicator-mineral analyses (KIM), geochemical analyses and lithologic analyses.
  • Compilation and digitization of older data in the project area.

Benefits:

A strong public geoscience knowledge base is recognized internationally as a key competitive advantage in profiling a jurisdiction’s geological potential and attracting investment in mineral exploration and development. The products from this project will provide direct input to ongoing mineral exploration initiatives in northwestern Manitoba.

Plans for fiscal year 2017-2018:

  • 10 days of fieldwork based in Lynn Lake.
  • Submission of till samples for till geochemistry, carbonate content, grain-size and pebble lithology counts.
  • Submission of till samples for kimberlite-indicator-mineral (KIM) analyses.
  • DRI release of ice-flow indicator data.
  • DRI or open file release of KIM counts within six months of sample submission.
  • Compilation, digitization and publication of existing local data.
  • Preparation of an open file publication.
