Project Description

Main objectives:

The objectives of this project are to provide a state-of-the-art understanding of the stratigraphy, tectonic evolution and mineral potential of the Oxford Lake greenstone belt, and to better constrain the setting of historical mineral occurrences. The most recent MGS mapping program in this area was completed in 1974.

Methodology:

This project will employ a multidisciplinary approach that includes systematic (1:20k) geological mapping of the extensive shoreline exposures on Oxford Lake, in conjunction with structural analysis, lithogeochemistry, Nd-Sm isotopic studies, U-Pb geochronology (LA-MC-ICPMS and TIMS) and mineral deposit investigations (lode gold, volcanogenic massive sulphide, granitic Li-Cs-Ta pegmatite and REEs).

Benefits:

This project will build on the results of the Western Superior NATMAP project in the adjacent Knee Lake belt (MGS; 1997-1998), and will provide valuable new geoscientific data to the mineral exploration industry and the Bunibonibee (Oxford House) Cree Nation.

Plans for fiscal year 2017-2018:

  • Ongoing data compilation and analysis; results to be included in regional compilation of the Oxford Lake – Knee Lake greenstone belt
