Flood Rings

Severe spring floods, such as the 1826 Red River flood, inundates riparian trees and causes oaks to develop rings with unusual anatomical features. These unusual rings, called flood rings, can be used to identify and date extreme floods several centuries prior to historical and instrumental flood records.
