Brandon University:
Overview

Reaching Out to Rural, Northern and Remote Communities

A small, primarily undergraduate institution, Brandon University is proud of its long tradition of teaching, research and scholarly excellence. As the only Manitoba university situated outside the city of Winnipeg, the university reaches out to the rural, northern, remote, First Nations and Aboriginal communities it serves. Brandon University and its faculty play inportant roles in fostering development within these communities and their work serves as an important resource in enriching the quality of life for the people in these areas. This focus on outreach is reflected in the university's mission statement and in its research agenda.

The university houses the Department of Rural Development that recently received a grant from Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives to launch an online, open-access Journal of Rural and Community Development. Additionally, the university received more than $900,000 for the creation of an Environmental Sciences laboratory on campus.

At Brandon University, ICT research is concentrated in the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Physics and Astronomy. There is a Canada Research Chair in Systems and Modelling and a parallel computing cluster funded by the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Participation in the WestGrid II consortium of high performance computing is also being planned. The faculty members participating in ICT research are involved in the theory of ordered sets, algorithim design in computer algebra, game theory, the numerical solution of the equations of quantum chromodynamics, and the modelling of the surfaces and atmospheres of stars, the structure of our Galaxy, and the biophysical interactions between organisms.

Faculty members and the administration of Brandon University will continue to pursue ICT research by providing the infrastructure and highly qualified personnel needed for this vital avenue. Investments in hardware and people will continue to increase with time. This i sthe consequence of an overt commitment on the part of the university as well a an inevitable shift in this direction by many of the disciplines from which we draw our instructors and researchers.
