Background

Inter-Provincial Network

On June 10, 2005, the western ministers of health, justice and public safety met in Regina to develop a regional response to the emerging crystal meth problem in Western Canada. At this meeting, the ministers identified the need for an integrated and coordinated approach to crystal meth across the Western provinces and territories. They called on the federal government to fund and implement a national awareness campaign and to create new offences under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act for possession of precursors. They also agreed to work collaboratively to better control over-the-counter cold remedies used in the production of crystal meth.

Inter-Agency Networking

In 2004, Manitoba Healthy Living established an Addictions Agencies Network. This group is working together to discuss issues related to crystal meth (among other drugs) and to enhance collaboration and integration between programs and agencies.

Health Canada, Manitoba Healthy Living and the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) are cost sharing a staff position at the AFM to coordinate a network of health, police, education, addiction and Aboriginal community representatives in Manitoba. The committee meets regularly to work together to prevent or reduce the harm resulting from substance use and abuse.
