Honouring Mary Eady
Mary Eady, a pioneer of the women's movement, died in Ottawa November 16, 2011 at the age of 85, after a lifetime dedicated to improving the condition of women in Canada. Manitoba women are most fortunate to have benefited from her contribution over two decades. In 1972 Mary, a young widow with two sons was employed by the Schreyer government to establish a Women's Bureau in the Department of Labour just as the women's movement was blossoming. Her mandate, which she interpreted broadly, was to assist women both in the workplace or those returning to work outside the home. She set up career counselling, provided research, workshops and seminars across the province addressing issues from childcare, pay equity, pensions, family leave as well as barriers to women entering non-traditional training or employment. After five years she left to establish a similar Bureau within the Canadian Labour Congress in Alberta. There she worked across Canada encouraging women to take leadership roles in their unions and to negotiate benefits to achieve equality in their workplace. In 1982 Mary returned to Winnipeg as the first woman Deputy Minister of Labour. Through her pioneering efforts Manitoba was the first province to pass pay equity laws as well as major equality amendments to pension legislation. Mary was a tall, soft spoken woman who mentored many women who have gone on to leadership roles in a variety of fields. When asked if she was one of those women's lib types, she would reply, "Yes, isn't everyone?" Her wise council will be sorely missed.
