Housing & Income as Social Determinants of Women’s Health in Canadian Cities (2009): This study, initiated by York University, analyzes housing and income as social determinants of health. These particular social determinants provide a key context for understanding the living conditions and health of women in Canada. Women show greater disadvantage as indicated by higher poverty rates and higher likelihood of leading lone-parent families. Better Off in a Shelter? (2008): This research report, released by the University of Toronto’s Centre for Urban and Community Studies, focuses on the unhoused population of families with children. This study offers an extensive understanding of the way in which discrimination plays a role in homelessness among immigrant and refugee families. Recommendations for service providers are made and the need for secure transitional and supportive housing programs for non-status migrant women is outlined. Study looks at residential hotels as home: A first-ever study examined the role residential hotels play in sheltering an estimated 1,000 Winnipeggers. The study is titled Beyond a Front Desk: The Residential Hotel as Home by Jino Distasio, Susan Mulligan, Constable Gerard Allard and Mike Maunder. The Single Room Occupancy Hotel (SRO) has become an important form of affordable housing in the City of Winnipeg. Ten recommendations, intended to help preserve and protect this form of shelter and improve residents' quality of life, are offered.
