Obtaining Permit for Your Over Length Trailer

MPI and Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI) have worked together to support trailer owners who have inadvertently purchased a trailer that exceeds legal dimensions in Manitoba. To apply for a permit for an over length trailer, you will need to provide Transportation and Infrastructure’s Permit Services with the following information:

  • Proof of registration of the trailer unit in Manitoba within the last two (2) years, which can be emailed or faxed to the Permit Office prior to obtaining a permit.
  • If the trailer has not previously been registered in Manitoba, owners can provide proof that the trailer was purchased between January 1 and December 31, 2021. Proof of Purchase can emailed or faxed to the Permit Office. Trailers purchased after December 31, 2021 will not be granted a permit through this process.
  • Previous registration information on both the towing unit and the trailer unit, such as the year, make, plate number, full VIN number, number of axles and the RRF/RGVW if known, are needed to apply for the permit.
  • Permit applicants should also be prepared to provide the following dimensions:
    • Overall length of trailer and towing vehicle
    • Length of the trailer
    • Rear effective overhang (from centre of rear axle group to the end of the trailer)
  • The overall length of the towing vehicle and trailer must not exceed the legal length of 21.5 m.
  • Not all over length trailers will qualify for a permit.
  • Trailers designed to carry cargo must meet the legal rear overhang of 4.0 m.

PLEASE NOTE:

An over length permit issued by Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure allows you to travel in Manitoba with an over length trailer. The permit does not provide insurance coverage. Be sure to contact an insurance agent to arrange insurance for your trailer.

Some other provinces in Canada also limit trailer length for RV and cargo trailers to 12.5 m. If you intend to travel outside of Manitoba with your trailer, you may be required to obtain a permit from the province(s) you are travelling in. Be sure to check with that province prior to your trip.
