Strengthening the Red Seal-Survey
 For 50 years, Canada’s provinces and territories have worked together to build the Red Seal Program, a system of common standards for the skilled trades. The Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship (CCDA) is seeking your feedback in an effort to strengthen the Red Seal Program and provide a model that provides even greater support for skills acquisition and skills recognition. Apprenticeship introduces AccessManitoba - Services include online application, course registration and payment
AccessManitoba introduces a new way to access government programs and services all in one place - interact online, by phone, or in person.  AccessManitoba alsoprovides self service website where profile information can be updated, an Apprenticeship Application can be submitted, and apprentices can register and pay for Apprenticeship Technical Training.  Consider registering online for 2011-2012 and avoid in-person, telephone wait times.  Login and registration information will be distributed to apprentices the week of June 20th, 2011. Employers currently registered with Apprenticeship Manitoba will also receive login instructions in the coming weeks.

Apprenticeship Technical Training - Begins June 27, 2011
2011-2012 Technical Training Course Calendars are now available. Read the Calendar carefully for course registration instructions and available offerings.  In addition to in-person and telephone registration, online course registration for apprentices is also available beginning June 27th through AccessManitoba.  Apprentices can login to AccessManitoba by including the username and password provided to them by Apprenticeship Manitoba.

OnLine Services…coming June 2011
New technology is being developed that will support Apprenticeship Manitoba’s service transformation strategy  to better meet the needs of our visitors and improve services such as the ability for clients to update contact information and register and pay for technical training online. Additional services will be offered in fall of 2011. To prepare for a smooth transition to access online services, apprentices and employers currently registered with Apprenticeship Manitoba are asked to ensure that their contact information is correct.

Apprenticeship Manitoba to offer online technical training
Online technical training is now available to Manitobans with a new partnership with Manitoba’s three colleges, led by Red River College. Online courses enable Manitobans in urban, rural and northern communities to learn, study and work close to their homes and families. 12 designated trades and common core subjects including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS), math/science and communication will be offered online in 2011-2012. Be Proud. Manitoba is a leader in Red Seal Exam Scores
According to recent statistics compiled by the Canadian Council of Directors of Apprenticeship over the past seven years (2004-2010), an assessment of Manitoba’s   Red Seal exam pass for all trades show that Manitoba’s average score is consistently higher than the Canada’s, the size of Manitoba’s lead over Canada has also been increasing since 2004 and a cross-jurisdictional comparison of Red Seal scores in 2010 demonstrates that Manitoba outperformed all of the other jurisdictions with a pass rate of 84%. Changes to Apprenticeship and Certification Act - General Regulation
Effective February 9, 2011, apprentices who are no longer employed in their trade may apply for a transfer of their apprenticeship agreement to the executive director of Apprenticeship Manitoba for purposes of continuing with technical training. Certain conditions apply.

Important Changes to Motor Vehicle Mechanic Regulation
To remain consistent across Canada and in keeping with the Red Seal trade name, the trade name of Motor Vehicle Mechanic will now be referred to as Automotive Service Technician. Wage rates for this trade will also change as of May 4, 2011.

Tim McLean Memorial Bursary Announced
The Tim McLean Memorial Bursary is part of the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund, established in 2009 in response to a need to improve the scholarships and bursary programs available for apprentices in Manitoba. In addition to the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund Bursary, prospective and/or current Aboriginal apprentices in Manitoba are also able to apply for this new bursary program established in memory of Tim McLean, an aspiring Aboriginal Manitoba apprentice interested in becoming a motor vehicle mechanic. This annual bursary will be awarded based primarily on financial need, but academic standing and a personal statement from each applicant will also be taken into consideration. New Apprenticeable Trade - Power Generation and Transmission Mobile Crane Operator and Power Generation and Transmission Boom Truck Hoist Operator
On November 24, 2010, the Manitoba government registered Power Generation and Transmission Mobile Crane Operator and Power Generation and Transmission Boom Truck Hoist Operator
as three-year apprenticeable trade programs with Manitoba Hydro.

Manitoba Trucking Association Scholarships Awarded to Highest Achieving Apprentices Congratulations to the following recipients of the Manitoba Trucking Association Scholarship for achieving the highest marks in their respective apprenticeship trade. Travis Zinkowski (Bison Transport) Level 1 Transport Trailer Technician, Terrence Degerness (Freightliner Manitoba Ltd.) Level 1 Transport Truck Mechanic, Tim Janzen (Maxim Truck and Trailer) Level 2 Transport Truck Mechanic and Barry Biswanger (Kleysen Transportation Solutions) Level 2 Transport Trailer Technician.

Manitoba Public Insurance Apprenticeship Grant and Tool Allowance
Up to $2,000 is now available after successful completion of each level of the Motor Vehicle Body Repairer and Motor Vehicle Body Painter apprenticeship program. Up to $5,000 is also available to registered apprentices in these trades to help cover the cost of purchasing tools. Click here for more information.

Winners of the 2010 Apprenticeship Awards of Distinction Announced
Following a beautiful celebration at the Fort Garry Hotel, Friday, November 5th, the winners of the 2010 Awards of Distinction were announced. Congratulations to John McNarry - Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Assiniboine College (Instructor of the Year), Evan Bowman - Industrial Instrument Mechanic, HudBay Minerals (Journeyperson of the Year –Rural), Carl Gleich - Carpenter, PCL Constructors (Journeyperson of the Year – Urban), Northland Ford Sales-The Pas,( Employer of the Year- Rural), PCL Constructors Ltd. (Employer of the Year- Urban),Grant Kurian Trucking Ltd. ( Employer of the Year -Internationally Experienced Tradespersons). Apprenticeship Manitoba, along with the Apprenticeship and Certification Board thank all participating employers, journeypersons, instructors and their nominators. Make a contribution to the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund
The Apprenticeship Endowment Fund managed in conjunction with the Winnipeg Foundation and overseen by the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund Advisory Committee assists Apprenticeship Manitoba in attracting and retaining a diverse mix of apprentices through the availability of financial incentives made available through this fund. Tax receipts are provided.

Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program Infoline
The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program has established an Infoline to provide Canadians with a toll-free service to answer frequently-asked-questions about Red Seal as well as financial incentives for apprenticeship. The number is 1-877-599-6933. Callers also have the option of leaving a message and an agent will return their call to answer their questions.

Len Evans Centre Officially Opened at ACC
New trades training facility at Assiniboine Community College, officially opened its doors October 1st, 2010. More infomation.

New Apprenticeable Trade - Construction Craft Worker
On July 21, 2010, the Manitoba government registered Construction Craft Worker as a two-year apprenticeable trade program.

Changes to Existing Trade Regulations
On July 21, 2010, the Manitoba government registered a new trade regulation for the trade of Industrial Welder and made amendments to trade of Hairstylist.

New Apprenticeable Trade - Marine and Outdoor Power Equipment Technician
In September 2009, Marine and Outdoor Power Equipment Technician was designated as a three-year apprenticeable trade in the Province of Manitoba.

Apprenticeship part of winning team for Learning Innovation Award
In a joint partnership with RRC, Apprenticeship Manitoba created this winning e-apprenticeship pilot project of delivering an electrical level 1 course on-line. This course proved to be successful with registered apprentices and there is a demand for more alternate course delivery options. Apprenticeship Manitoba is currently looking at ways to integrate e-learning in its course schedule.

Apprenticeship Manitoba recognized in Manitoba Service Excellence Award-Partnership category
Louisiana Pacific Ltd. (LP) partners with representatives from Apprenticeship Manitoba, Employment Manitoba, Industry and Workforce Development the Northern Manitoba Sector Council and Workplace Education Manitoba, to win the 2010 Manitoba Service Excellence Partnership Award for their work on the innovative Industry Workplace Apprenticeship Host project. The project assisted LP to retain highly skilled journeypersons at a reduced cost to the company, expand apprenticeship opportunities for existing employees, and recruit new apprentices from the surrounding communities during the challenging economic downturn in the Swan River region. During layoff, the Northern Manitoba Sector Council was the employer/host to enable LP journeypersons and apprentices to continue on-site practical training at LP.

Apprenticeship Manitoba awards first annual Endowment Fund Bursary
In 2009, Manitoba Competitiveness, Training and Trade announced the creation of the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund, established to promote participation in the apprenticeship system and support prospective and current apprentices in Manitoba. The Apprenticeship Endowment Fund is managed by the Apprenticeship Endowment Fund Committee (made up of members of the Apprenticeship and Certification Board) in partnership with the Winnipeg Foundation.

Apprenticeship Manitoba is pleased to announce that the first annual Apprenticeship Endowment Fund Bursary 2010 has been granted to a prospective female apprentice planning to register in the Electrician trade.
