Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) training opportunities within each of its three cordnerstone areas:
The following two levels of training and activity are located at Red River College:
Faculty and staff from post-secondary institutions and other organizations across the province are invited to attend the seven workshop areas.
The PLAR Foundation Training workshops provide basic training in PLAR processes and system development. This course has also been developed for online delivery.
The PLAR Foundation Training workshops may be completed individually or as a complete course. Participants may choose to complete the seven workshops for course credit. This course credit can be applied to the Certificate in Adult Education (CAE) offered through RRC. Participants will be granted credit for the course upon successful completion of the workshop series, the assessment processes and an independent PLAR project.
The are no registration fees for faculty, administration and staff of Manitoba's public post-secondary institutions for the PLAR Foundation Training workshops outlined in this brochure. Priority will be given to staff and faculty of Manitoba's public post-secondary institutions. Other organizations and individuals are encouraged to register.
This PLAR Practitioner Training course (42 hours) consists of a series of seven workshops and is intended for those who have considerable experience in the PLAR field on which to base discussions and critical analysis required within the course. The PLAR Foundation Training is a pre-requisite for this course, or equivalent previous learning can be proven.
The PLAR Practitioner Training (advanced) allows for in-depth identification of personal challenges and issues related to the roles and responsibilities of PLAR practitioners in advising, assessing or facilitating systems development. The workshops incorporate individual and group issues.
During the workshops, there is an emphasis on the integration of PLAR into organizational systems, discussion of effective practices for serving adult learners, how PLAR can act as a catalyst for positive change, the role and practice of advocacy for the individual, the assessor and the PLAR program, and how co-operative and collaboration activities are key to successful implementation of PLAR. As well, participants complete a scan of PLAR across Canada and internationally and then analyze what they might be able to learn or incorporate into their practice.
The workshops provide a forum for discussion of specific challenges and skills within the roles of advising, assessing and systems development, with a critical exchange between participants of possible solutions or enhancements. Samples of actual tools and resources will be used with an opportunity to practice specific skills.
Participants will complete a self-assessment of technology-related skills required by a competency PLAR practitioner as identified in the PLAR Practitioner DACUM. They will have the opportunity to improve technology-related skills.
