Make your claim on your income tax return!
If you graduated with a degree, diploma or certificate from a post-secondary institution recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency on or after January 1, 2007 and now work and pay taxes in Manitoba, you can benefit from the Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate. It doesn’t matter if your post-secondary training took place in Manitoba or elsewhere.
This tuition rebate is claimed on the personal income tax return on Form MB428 – Manitoba Tax after completing form T1005. Both forms are located at the Canada Revenue Agency website as follows:
MB428 - http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/5007-c/5007-c-09e.pdf
T1005 - http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t1005/README.html
Eligible tuition is tuition that qualifies for the existing non-refundable tuition tax credit under federal rules. All eligible tuition should be reported on form T1005. The annual rebate will be the lesser of 1) 10% of the total tuition 2) Manitoba tax payable and 3) $2,500.
When filing your tax return it is not necessary to submit any documentation. However proof of tuition payment (T2202A slip or other proof) plus a copy of your degree, diploma or certificate should be available if the Canada Revenue Agency asks to see these documents.
If you graduated in a previous year (after 2006 and prior to this tax year), and you paid Manitoba tax in those years, and you did not previously claim this tuition rebate, you may decide to amend your prior year returns. Keep in mind that, if you choose this course of action, you will need to establish your prior year income tax claims before claiming your tuition rebate for the current tax year. Your other option is to begin your claim in the current tax year.
