Project Description

Main objectives:

The objectives of this project are to produce a new 1:20 000 scale geological map with marginal notes and to provide a better understanding of the stratigraphy, tectonic evolution and mineral potential of the Snow Lake – Squall Lake – Herblet Lake area. Effort will focus on documenting and better constrain the setting of known gold occurrences of the area as well as assessing mineral potential for VMS-type base metal mineralization.

Methodology:

This project involves systematic (1:20k) geological mapping of the Snow Lake – Herblet Lake area with 1:10 000 scale geological mapping conducted in key areas. Geology of the Squall – Varnson lakes area was compiled from 1:20 000 scale geological map produced by Dr. A. H. Bailes and D.C.P. Schledewitz (1997-1999) complemented by an additional 2 weeks of traverses in selected areas. In conjunction with geological mapping, structural analysis, lithogeochemistry, Nd-Sm isotopic studies, U-Pb geochronology (LA-MC-ICPMS and TIMS) and mineral deposit investigations (lode gold and volcanogenic massive sulphide) are planned.

Benefits:

The project will complement the recent 1:20 000 scale map compilation by Bailes and Galley (2007) to the south and provide the entire Snow Lake area with up-to-date geoscientific reports and maps. The new map and its accompanying report will also provide a better stratigraphic and structural understanding of an area highly prospective for lode gold and VMS deposits. It will also provide valuable new geoscientific data to the mineral exploration industry and the Snow Lake community.
