Rare metals and REE (Brezden Lake)

Project Status: Completed (2016)

Project Information

Principal investigators:
Tania Martins, Chris Couëslan, Christian Böhm

Location:
Brezden Lake, part of 64C/4

Project Description

Main objectives:

The main objective of this project is to investigate the potential of the Brezden Lake syenite to host rare earth element mineralization. This syenite is a heterogeneous intrusion with relatively high content of REE+Y (whole rock geochemistry).

Methodology:

  • Thin sections from previous sampling were examined and minerals such as allanite and calcite were identified.
  • Whole rock geochemistry reveals total REE+Y varying from 1686 to 3055 ppm which is comparable to some of the fenites found at Eden Lake.
  • Values of 418 and 617 ppm of W were reported for the main syenite body. These values are compared to what is found in syenites associated with gold mineralization.
  • Conduct detailed outcrop mapping of the syenite complex and radiometric ground survey with hand-held spectrometer.
  • Extensive sampling for thin section, mineralogical, geochemical, and isotopic studies.

Benefits:

Better knowledge of the mineralogy and whole rock geochemistry of the Brezden Lake syenite. Identification of new REE occurrences will reveal more of the rare element potential of this locality and possibly open doors for exploration.
