Justice

Aboriginal Justice Inquiry (AJI)

In 1988, the Manitoba government commissioned the AJI. This followed the murders of Helen Betty Osborne in 1971 and J.J. Harper in 1988. The AJI has played a key role in driving changes to address systemic racism in Manitoba’s criminal justice system. For the ISB, key links to the AJI include:

  • Elders as important healers and medicine people. They offer wellness services to staff, families and the community.
  • Increased support for job opportunities for Indigenous people, especially Indigenous women.

This aims to change how society views Indigenous women. The branch also aims to increase Indigenous presence in senior and middle management roles at Manitoba Justice.
