Empower Women 20/20 Awards

The United Nations (UN) began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975. This initiative has become a global phenomenon, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also represents a call to action to advance gender equality in Manitoba and around the world.

2020 is an important year, as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action on gender equality, and celebrate Manitoba’s 150th birthday.

This is also the year we are commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the first woman elected to the Manitoba Legislature – Edith Rogers. Rogers was elected in 1920. She was a Metis woman, who worked hard to ensure that other women would follow her into the Manitoba Legislature.

In support of the international movement to achieve gender equality, and commemorating Edith Rogers, the Manitoba Status of Women Secretariat seeks to honour Manitoba women who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of gender equality. Please join us in recognizing their important efforts by nominating a woman for the Empower Women 20/20 Awards. This award will honour women who have helped further gender equality in important aspects of Manitoba life – such as community service, law, education, arts and culture – thereby enriching us all.

Twenty awards will be presented, reflecting Manitoba’s rich diversity and regional representation.

Thank you for your help in honouring our province’s outstanding women.

Due to COVID-19, we have made the decision to postpone the Empower 20/20 awards until 2021. We appreciate all applications that have been received thus far, and will be considering them when we reopen the awards.
