Early Childhood Educator: Internationally Educated Qualifications Program (ECE:IEQ)

What it is

The ECE:IEQ Program is a qualifications recognition process for individuals who have international education with a focus on early learning and child care. Successful completion of the program results in an Early Childhood Educator II (ECE II) classification level as determined by The Community Child Care Standards Act and Manitoba Regulation 62/86.

Who is eligible

Eligible individuals must:

  • have a minimum of two years of international education with a focus on early learning and child care;
  • have experience working in the area of early learning and child care prior to entering Canada;
  • be currently employed in a licensed child care centre; and
  • be working a minimum of 20 hours per week directly with the children.

Important admission criteria

Applicants must have:

  • a commitment to the profession of early childhood education;
  • a willingness to invest time and energy to the ECE:IEQ process of approximately 14 – 16 weeks (if no learning gaps are identified);
  • a willingness to cover minimal costs related to purchasing learning aids and other supplies, attending meetings, etc.;
  • support from the centre in terms of on-site mentoring and assessment;
  • a willingness to obtain professional certification and early learning and child care experience in Manitoba; and
  • a willingness to participate in continuous professional development in the field of early learning and child care.

What is involved

The process requires:

  • completing the Early Childhood Educator:
  • Internationally Educated Qualifications Application;
  • participating in an interview process to determine
  • admission into the program;
  • attending an orientation session, workshops and a
  • minimum of two networking meetings;
  • having two workplace observations done by an Advisor Assessor and a Peer Assessor;
  • completing a documentation file;
  • addressing learning gaps, if identified; and
  • attending a profile meeting.
