Trauma Informed Resources

Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience (e.g. a personal trauma like the death of a child) that results in a lasting emotional response. It can harm a person's sense of safety and sense of self, and can lead to a variety of health issues.

A number of organizations in Manitoba are grounded in trauma-informed care, many of which are community and Indigenous-led. Trauma-informed care is based on an understanding of the vulnerabilities and triggers those affected by violence may experience and how to avoid re-traumatizing individuals seeking assistance. Triggers prompt the involuntary recall of previous traumatic experience and may take a variety of forms including certain smells, sounds, tones of voice, etc.

With an emphasis on support, safety, and compassion, these organizations provide a variety of services and programs for survivors of violence and the families of those affected by the tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals.
