Biography

The Honourable Derek Johnson was first elected as the MLA for Interlake in 2016 and re-elected in the new constituency of Interlake-Gimli in 2019. As an MLA, he was a member of Treasury Board and, until his appointment as Minister of Municipal Relations, served as Government Whip.

Before his election to the Legislature, Minister Johnson served as a councillor for the RM of St. Laurent from 2010 to 2014 with responsibilities that included Finance, Drainage, and Emergency Services. During his time on council, he also served on the West Interlake Planning District and helped guide his community through the unprecedented flood of 2011.

In addition to serving in elected office, Minister Johnson worked for many years as a Financial Advisor in the Interlake area and as Assistant Branch Manager for a local financial institution.

He was born and raised in Oak Point, which his family has called home for the past four generations. He is a proud to call the Interlake home and lives along the shores of Lake Manitoba with his wife Tara and their two children.
