Manitoba Youth Job Centres: Making summer employment connections in your community

Manitoba Youth Job Centres provide community-based summer youth employment skills throughout rural and northern Manitoba. Students and youth from ages 13 to 29, receive FREE assistance finding your first job or assistance for your next career steps.

The Centres provide students and youth with important information and education on:

  • Career development
  • Resume preparation
  • Interview assistance
  • Job-search techniques
  • Labour regulations
  • Workplace health and safety
  • Post-secondary assistance

Offices are open from mid May to late August each year. Drop by your local community office during the summer. If you require information during our off-season, please email MYJC@gov.mb.ca and one of our coordinators would be happy to help.

Offices are operated by the Manitoba government in partnership with community-based Host Organizations in rural locations throughout Manitoba.


Students and Youth ages 13-16

Did you know that 13 years of age is a great time to start developing employable skills?
Do you want to develop valuable skills to add to your resume?

The MYJC program offer services to help you develop and prepare for your first job. Our Odd Job Squad program offers 13 to 16 years olds casual supervised first-work and volunteer experiences for young people looking to gain hands-on career-related skills and experience to gain the necessary skills demanded by employers.

Our participants have participated in various activities such as:

  • Car washes
  • Window painting
  • Popcorn sales

Some of the skills gained by our participants include teamwork, customer service, time management and basic entrepreneurship. To join an Odd Job Squad, contact your local MYJC office and remember you need your parent’s permission and a Social Insurance Number! (MYJC can provide assistance obtaining one with parents permission.)

Students and Youth ages 16-29

We can assist you in finding your next job or guide you to your desired career path.

At the Manitoba Youth Job Centre, we recognize looking for a job can be very stressful and difficult. When you visit your local MYJC office we will meet with you and guide you towards your next steps.

Services we offer include:

  • Resume writing (new or current)
  • Interview preparation
  • Job search resources
  • Government programs and initiatives (student loans, apprenticeship, etc.)
  • Post-secondary assistance
  • Workplace health and safety and labor regulations

Services are provided free of charge. Just remember to bring you Social Insurance Number (MYJC can help on obtaining one) and no appointment is necessary.

Employers

Did you know there are numerous benefits to hire young employees?

Young workers can provide new ideas and innovation to the companies they work for. These youth tend to be adaptable, which helps with how often technology changes. By providing opportunities to youth, you are helping grow them into driven, confident, community-minded individuals.

At the Manitoba Youth Job Centre, we can present your job opportunities to the youth. If the job is a good fit, we can refer them. This ensures you receive the best suitable candidate for the job, and we can continue to help our youth develop in their employment journey.

Parents and Educators

You play a key role in helping youth become ready for employment.

Parents, if your child is interested in participating in programs offered by the MYJC, you are welcome to visit the local MYJC Office or call the Program Coordinator for more information.

Currently, all program participants require a Social Insurance Number for statistics purposes. If you need further information regarding how to obtain one, stop by or call your local office and we can assist you.

Odd Job Squad events are fully supervised by a Youth Engagement Leader. Youth Engagement Leaders are trained in workplace health and safety and all events have been reviewed to ensure all precautions are taken so that your child can have a positive, fun, and safe experience. For your child to participate with the Odd Job Squad, we require parental permission by signing the parental consent form which can be obtained from your local office.

Educators, our centre leaders are available to start school visits mid May. We can deliver presentations to schools, youth groups and any other student/youth-focused programs on career and employability topics.

Youth Engagement Leader Positions

We are looking for confident, energetic, post-secondary students looking for summer employment working with youth in their local communities across Manitoba. This position is full time for approximately 15 weeks from May to August 2024.

Manitoba Youth Job Centres are located throughout rural and northern Manitoba. As a MYJC Youth Engagement Leader, you will work in the local community assisting youth with career development, job search assistance, hosting Odd Job Squad events, all while making summer employment connections.

This valuable leadership experience will provide you the opportunity to build supervisory, communication and event planning skills, which will help you succeed in whatever career path you choose down the line.

We are looking for candidates who are looking for a challenge to use their motivation, energy and leadership skills to network and partner with local business and organizations in the community to operate the local Manitoba Youth Job Centre.

Responsibilities include:

  • operating a local community employment resource program for students, youth and employers.
  • organizing and operating youth first-work experience community programs.
  • developing and delivering training and educational presentations to students and youth.
  • providing job search, career development and employability skills in local community classrooms and other venues.
  • promoting and advertising MYJC programs and services throughout the community.
  • providing information and access of other government and community programs.

Are you Eligible?

All applicants must:

  • be a resident of Manitoba.
  • be a student currently attending a post-secondary institution and planning to return to studies in the Fall of 2024.
  • have a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
  • register with STEP services.
  • be bilingual for certain office locations (indicated in the “Office locations” section of this site).

Successful applicants must:

  • be available to start employment the first week of May and continue in the full-time position until the end of August 2024
  • attend a paid 3-day training session in Winnipeg (accommodations, meals and mileage/travel expenses are paid) prior to beginning work at the community MYJC offices
