Guiding Principles
In Manitoba, people with intellectual disabilities have the right to make their own decisions. The Vulnerable Persons Living with a Mental Disability (VPA) Act is the law that gives you these rights. Any program or service that is provided to you must follow these five guiding principles:
- You can make your own decisions.
- You will be encouraged to make your own choices.
- If you need help making a decision, friends, family, and service providers can help you to understand your choices so you can make the decision that is best for you.
- Any help you receive will respect your privacy and dignity as an adult.
- If there is a decision you feel you cannot make even with help, a substitute decision maker can be named for you, as a last resort.
Community Living disABILITY Services follows these guiding principles when working with you.
