Stratigraphic Map SM2012-1 is a set of 134 maps (cross-sections) representing the Manitoba Geological Survey's most current interpretation of Phanerozoic rocks and sediment in southern Manitoba. Each of the cross-section maps represent an east-west transect across the entire province. The transects are spaced 5 km apart from the Manitoba-North Dakota border to 55°N and have a vertical exaggeration of 150 to better illustrate thin strata. Data sources include the Manitoba water well, oil well and stratigraphic drillhole databases, large-lake bathymetry, the Lake Winnipeg seismic survey, and surface datasets such as the provincial surficial geology compilation map series. All available geological maps and reports, including published and unpublished subsurface and surficial information by various authors, were considered. Data representing various aspects of paleogeography for the area were also included. The transect maps are a valuable geoscientific and exploration tool useful to:
- the petroleum industry looking to develop or explore for hydrocarbon targets,
- the metals industry in the planning of sub-Phanerozoic exploration programs,
- the industrial minerals industry to target Phanerozoic drill programs to expand or find new resources,
- universities, government, industry and environmental organizations investigating CO2 capture and storage, and
- the general public for outreach and education.
