Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is a nonprofit organization comprised of local, state, provincial, territorial and federal commercial motor vehicle safety officials and industry representatives. The Alliance aims to prevent commercial motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities and believes that collaboration between government and industry improves road safety and saves lives.
The CVSA’s mission is to improve commercial motor vehicle safety and enforcement by providing guidance, education and advocacy for enforcement and industry across North America.
CVSA member organizations, including 13,000 enforcement officials, are dedicated to transportation safety and are committed to helping the Alliance achieve its goals of uniformity, compatibility and reciprocity of commercial motor vehicle inspections throughout North America.
Approximately 4 million commercial motor vehicle inspections are conducted every year throughout North America to ensure the commercial motor vehicles on our roadways are operating safely. Specially trained safety inspectors inspect these vehicles using the North American Standard Inspection Program.
Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement (MMCE) is a member of CVSA and is the lead agency in Manitoba responsible for conducting CVSA roadside inspections, which places unsafe vehicles and drivers out of service until the dangerous conditions are remedied. All of the MMCE officers and some police officers within the province of Manitoba are CVSA trained and certified to perform CVSA level 1 inspections (the most thorough). To retain certification, all CVSA inspectors must perform a minimum of 32 inspections annually and must attend required upgrade training.
In recent years, CVSA Region V (Canada) has taken a leadership role in developing and implementing focused enforcement campaigns designed to reduce incidence of high-risk safety defects and heighten industry awareness.
