Alternate Dispute Resolution

Alternate Dispute Resolution refers to resolving disputes through methods other than litigation (going to court). The Family Law Modernization Act, passed by the Manitoba government in June 2019, includes new laws and amends some current laws to ensure families seeking to separate or divorce throughout Manitoba will be offered a menu of services, supports and programs that may help them settle family law issues such as parenting arrangements, child and spousal support, and property division outside of court.

To help reach an agreement outside of court, families may attempt to settle their disputes through public or private services such as mediation, arbitration, collaborative family law, and the Family Dispute Resolution Service, once it is launched.
