Animal welfare is the responsibility of everyone. Education is a critical factor in animal welfare. In this section, you will find resources on animal welfare for owners, caregivers, businesses and veterinarians.  
 

Five Freedoms

The Five Freedoms are internationally accepted standards of care that believe every living being has a right to humane treatment.

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: all animals should be provided with an adequate source of food and water.
 
2. Freedom from Discomfort: all animals should be provided with reasonable protection from extreme heat or cold.
 
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: all animals should be provided with adequate medical attention when wounded or ill.
 
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: all animals should be provided with an area or enclosure that is clean, well ventilated and provides adequate space.
 
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress: no animal should be subjected to conditions that cause extreme anxiety or distress.
