Note:
Brands previously registered on the ribs of cattle may continue to be renewed or transferred to immediate family members. However, no new brands can be issued in that rib location.

Approved Brand Designs
Brand designs consist of characters and optional symbols arranged in a specific layout. All new brands must follow standards for:
Characters
- Only approved letters, numbers, and design characters may be used.
- Depending on the letter, orientation may include:
- Forward
- Backward
- Lazy left (lying on left side)
Symbols
- Only specific design symbols (e.g., arrows, triangles) are permitted.
- Symbols may appear above or below characters following prescribed layout rules.
Layouts
- Characters and symbols must be positioned and grouped in accordance with Manitoba’s brand layout requirements.
Some older brands include characters, symbols, or layouts that are no longer permitted. These grandfathered brands may still be transferred to immediate family members or as part of a farm sale.
