Food and Beverage Processing 

Food and beverage manufacturing is the largest manufacturing sector in Manitoba, accounting for 30 percent of Manitoba's total manufacturing sales in 2021. Total food and beverage manufacturing sales in 2021 were $6.2 billion, nine percent higher than the previous year. The sector directly employed 14,440 Manitobans in 2021 and is the largest manufacturing employer in the province. 

Productive farmland suitable for the production of various crops and animals, access to state of the art research facilities and world-class transportation infrastructure, available highly skilled labour, and a business-friendly environment make Manitoba a unique place to invest in food and beverage processing. Manitoba has a vibrant food processing sector with 792 food processing establishments. Manitoba's three largest food processing industries are meat product manufacturing, grain and oilseed milling and dairy product manufactuing.

Major food processors in Manitoba include:

  • Meat products (Maple Leaf Foods, Hylife Foods, True North Foods, Granny's Poultry Co-operative Ltd., and Dunn-Rite)
  • Grains and Oilseeds (Bunge Canada, Viterra, Richardson Milling, Roquette, Emerson Milling, and Merit Functional Foods)
  • Potato (McCain Foods and Simplot)
  • Dairy Products (Lucerne Foods Ltd., Parmalat Dairy Bakery Inc., Dairyworld Foods, and MDI Holdings Corp)

Exports for processed food and beverage products stood at $3.82 billion in 2021, an increase of 15.7 percent as compared to 2020.  This accounts for 61 percent of the total food and beverage manufacturing sales in 2021. Manitoba exports processed food and beverage products to about 74 countries, with the top four markets in 2021 being United States, Japan, Mexico and China.

Organic Food and Beverage Processing 

The organic food processing sector in Manitoba is small but growing, with 32 food and beverage processors. More than half (21) of these processors produce value-added foods from the organic grains and oilseeds grown in the province.  There are several organic meat processors and one organic dairy processor.

Bioproduct Processing

Manitoba is positioned to power Canada's emerging bioproducts economy. Composite Knowledge Network

The Composites Knowledge Network (CKN) hosts Application and Impact Mobilization (AIM) Events to share knowledge from leading industry experts to the composites industry. AIM events and the CKN Knowledge in Practice Centre provide access to a repository of world-class composites knowledge, best practices and latest technologies and supports all levels of the composites industry.
